Zimbabwe Reports Deaths of Citizens Recruited by Russia for Ukraine Conflict

The Zimbabwean government has confirmed the deaths of 15 citizens who were recruited by Russia to participate in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. This announcement has prompted the government to intensify diplomatic efforts aimed at repatriating 66 other Zimbabweans who remain alive in the region.

According to Minister of Foreign Affairs Frederick Shava, these individuals were lured by deceptive job offers from fraudulent employment agencies that primarily utilized social media for recruitment. The promises included high salaries and safe working conditions, which, in reality, led to the confiscation of their travel documents and coerced participation in combat.

Shava stated, “They receive minimal training, if any, and find themselves in life-threatening situations. When they are injured, killed, or captured, the recruiters vanish, leaving their families in Zimbabwe without information, support, or recourse to hold anyone accountable.” He also noted that in many instances, the promised compensation for those recruited is never paid.

Zimbabwe maintains close relations with Russia and is currently focused on ensuring the safe return of survivors as well as the repatriation of deceased individuals’ bodies.

Russia has been actively recruiting citizens from various African nations to fight in Ukraine. Reports indicate that over a thousand Kenyans have been enlisted using similar tactics involving tourist visas and promises of lucrative salaries.

Additionally, recent reports have highlighted the deaths of foreign mercenaries, including a Filipino who was killed while fighting alongside Russian forces in Donetsk. Ukrainian forces also captured two Colombian nationals in Pokrovsk who were fighting for the Russian side.

Furthermore, South Africans have reportedly been deceived into serving in the Russian military, facing harsh conditions such as working in trenches during freezing temperatures, prolonged periods without water and adequate food, and being forced to evade drone attacks.

The number of identified foreign nationals from Africa who have died while fighting for Russia against Ukraine continues to rise. Recently, the bodies of two Nigerian citizens serving in the Russian army were discovered in Luhansk.

The Zimbabwean government has confirmed the deaths of 15 citizens recruited by Russia for the Ukraine conflict, prompting efforts to repatriate survivors. The recruitment involved deceptive job offers and resulted in dangerous combat situations for those involved.
