Peter Magyar, the leader of Hungary’s opposition, has announced ambitious plans to rewrite the constitution if his party secures victory in the upcoming parliamentary elections. Speaking at a campaign rally, he urged voters to grant his party a two-thirds majority in parliament, which would enable them to pass legislation without needing support from opposition parties.
Magyar characterized Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and his allies as a “mafia,” asserting that a successful election outcome would lead to the removal of key leaders in essential state institutions. This includes positions such as the president, heads of the supreme courts, the attorney general, and leaders of both the anti-monopoly authority and the state audit office.
He criticized these officials for failing to fulfill their duties and acting in the political interests of the current government. “We will restore the rule of law and democratic pluralism,” Magyar declared.
According to independent polls, Magyar’s party currently holds an advantage, although it remains unclear if this will be sufficient for a constitutional majority.
