The funeral ceremony for Patriarch Filaret of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine took place in Kyiv on March 22, concluding in the afternoon. His body was laid to rest in the crypt of the Volodymyr Cathedral, in accordance with his last wishes.
Earlier that day, a memorial service was held at St. Michael’s Golden-Domed Monastery, led by Metropolitan Epiphaniy of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine. Hundreds of mourners attended to pay their respects.
Following the service, a funeral procession carried Patriarch Filaret’s body from the monastery through Sofia Square to Volodymyr Cathedral, where the final rites were performed. The event saw participation from thousands of clergy and laypeople.
Patriarch Filaret passed away on March 20 at the age of 98. The Orthodox Church of Ukraine announced that farewell services would be held at St. Michael’s Golden-Domed Cathedral starting the evening of March 20 and continuing through March 21. On the morning of March 22, Metropolitan Epiphaniy presided over the memorial service at St. Michael’s, after which the body was transported to Volodymyr Cathedral for burial.
In a related development, the day after Filaret’s death, seven bishops from the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Kyiv Patriarchate announced the election of Archbishop Nikodim of Sumy as the new patriarch, with voting conducted online.
