Human rights groups in Hungary have called on the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) to reconsider its election monitoring delegation for the upcoming elections. The delegation includes Daria Boyarskaya, a Russian national under sanctions and linked to the Kremlin.
Boyarskaya, a senior advisor for the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly and a former interpreter for Russian President Vladimir Putin, was sanctioned by Poland in 2022, which barred her entry due to concerns that her activities could provoke international tensions.
Despite these sanctions, the OSCE has included her in the delegation overseeing the elections in Hungary. The Hungarian Helsinki Committee has expressed that her involvement undermines trust and confidentiality essential for effective election monitoring.
In response, the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly dismissed the concerns raised by human rights advocates as unfounded. Spokesperson Nate Perry stated that Boyarskaya is a professional who adheres to the organization’s code of conduct and confidentiality requirements. Currently, there are no plans to remove her from her duties in Hungary.
As the elections approach, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán faces the possibility of losing power for the first time in years. Although polls indicate a significant lead for the opposition party, Tisza, the elections will be determined in single-member districts, posing a serious threat to Orbán.
To maintain his position, Orbán has been leveraging the situation in Ukraine, framing it as a threat to Hungary. Additionally, there are reports of a covert disinformation campaign by Russia aimed at bolstering Orbán’s standing ahead of the elections on April 12, while undermining his main rival, opposition leader Péter Mándy.
Hungarian human rights advocates are pressing the OSCE to change its election monitoring delegation due to the inclusion of a sanctioned Russian advisor. Prime Minister Viktor Orbán faces significant electoral challenges as he navigates a tense political landscape ahead of the upcoming elections.
