Russian Strikes Hit Zaporizhzhia Infrastructure, Leaving One Injured and Thousands Without Power

Russian military forces have targeted infrastructure in Zaporizhzhia, resulting in one serious injury and widespread power outages, according to regional military administration head Ivan Fedorov.

Fedorov reported that over 38,000 residential and approximately 2,000 commercial subscribers experienced power loss following the attack. However, he noted that electricity has been restored to more than 83% of affected users, leaving 6,265 residential and 305 commercial customers still without service.

Russian forces have consistently employed various weaponry, including drones, missiles, and rocket systems, to strike Ukrainian cities and civilian infrastructure across the country.

Ukrainian authorities, along with international organizations, classify these attacks as war crimes, emphasizing their deliberate nature. The targeting of essential services and healthcare facilities aims to deprive civilians of electricity, heat, water supply, communication, medical assistance, and other vital living conditions.

Legal experts and human rights advocates assert that such actions may constitute genocidal acts, given the systematic approach to undermining the Ukrainian population. They cite statements from Russian officials that deny the existence of Ukrainians as a distinct ethnic group and call for their destruction.

The 1948 United Nations Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide obligates signatory nations—currently numbering 149—to prevent and punish acts of genocide during both wartime and peacetime.

The Convention defines genocide as actions intended to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnic, racial, or religious group. Indicators of genocide include the killing of group members, causing serious bodily harm, deliberately creating conditions aimed at the group’s destruction, preventing births within the group, and forcibly transferring children from one group to another.

Despite these allegations, Russian leadership denies that its military conducts targeted strikes against civilian infrastructure, asserting that such claims are unfounded.

Russian military strikes in Zaporizhzhia have resulted in one serious injury and extensive power outages affecting thousands. Ukrainian authorities classify these attacks as war crimes, highlighting a pattern of targeting essential civilian infrastructure.
