Spain Announces €1 Billion Military Aid Package for Ukraine by 2026

On March 18, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez declared a military assistance package for Ukraine amounting to €1 billion, set to be disbursed by 2026. This announcement was made during a joint press conference with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Sánchez emphasized Spain’s stance that Russia’s war against Ukraine is “unjust and illegal,” characterizing it as an unprovoked aggression. He remarked that the Russian government had miscalculated its expectation for a swift victory.

The Prime Minister detailed that the €1 billion aid will primarily support military efforts, involving co-production of certain materials in collaboration with the Spanish Ministry of Defense and Ukraine’s defense sector. He noted that Spain’s total assistance to Ukraine since the onset of the conflict has reached €4 billion, including recent funding for the SAFE initiative.

Sánchez reaffirmed Spain’s commitment to supporting the Ukrainian people with the same intensity as at the beginning of the full-scale Russian invasion.

Part of the aid, facilitated through the EU-established SAFE mechanism, will focus on establishing joint production with Ukraine’s defense industry. Additionally, some military equipment will be provided by the Spanish Ministry of Defense.

During his visit to Spain on March 18, President Zelensky held a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Sánchez, resulting in the signing of several cooperation agreements between the two nations.

Spain's Prime Minister has announced a significant military aid package for Ukraine, emphasizing continued support against Russian aggression. The initiative includes co-production efforts and is part of a broader commitment to assist Ukraine amid ongoing conflict.
