Iran Confirms Death of National Security Secretary Ali Larijani Following Israeli Airstrike

Iranian officials have confirmed the death of Ali Larijani, the Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council, following an Israeli airstrike. The announcement also stated that Larijani’s son and several bodyguards were killed in the attack.

The Iranian National Security Council described Larijani’s passing as a “martyr’s death” after a life dedicated to serving the nation. The statement praised his lengthy political career, emphasizing his commitment to Iran until his final moments and calling for unity in the face of external threats.

In addition to Larijani, Iran confirmed the death of Gholamreza Soleimani, a commander in the paramilitary forces affiliated with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). Reports from the semi-official Iranian news agency Mehr indicated that the funerals for both Larijani and Soleimani are scheduled for Wednesday.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian expressed profound sorrow over Larijani’s death, reflecting on the significant role he played within the Iranian political landscape. Larijani was considered a close ally of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and was viewed as a leading figure in the regime, especially following Khamenei’s death at the onset of the US-Israel conflict with Iran.

In August 2025, Larijani was appointed as the Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council and served as Khamenei’s representative in the council. He was also referred to as an advisor to Khamenei in various Iranian media outlets.

Prior to the airstrike, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz stated on March 17 that Larijani had been targeted and killed in the operation. This incident follows a recent announcement by the US government offering rewards of up to $10 million for information on key Iranian leaders, including the new Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei and several other high-ranking officials.

The Iranian government has confirmed the death of Ali Larijani, a prominent political figure, following an Israeli airstrike. His passing, alongside that of Gholamreza Soleimani, has prompted expressions of sorrow from Iranian leadership and highlights ongoing tensions in the region.
