In a recent military operation, Russia deployed 40 drones, specifically the “Lancet” model, targeting Kyiv. Analysts suggest that the primary objective of this attack was to showcase the remnants of these drones to the Russian public, rather than to achieve any significant military impact.
According to military advisor Andriy Flesch, the effectiveness of Ukraine’s air defense systems has increased, prompting Russian officials to seek ways to present positive news to President Vladimir Putin and the Russian populace. This has led to what he describes as an “information project” centered around the Lancet drones.
Flesch elaborated that the operation involved not only the Lancets but also the Iranian-made Shahed drones, indicating a coordinated effort to demonstrate the destruction of Russian technology in the Ukrainian capital. The aim was to provide a tangible narrative for Russian media and citizens.
The Lancet drones are designed for short-range strikes, typically effective within 30 to 80 kilometers. Flesch noted that the Russian forces likely launched these drones from a location close to Kyiv, taking advantage of favorable wind conditions to maximize their chances of reaching the city.
He emphasized that the basic Lancet model has no realistic chance of traveling the approximately 200 kilometers to Kyiv without modifications. To facilitate this operation, the drones were reportedly stripped of their payloads and equipped with additional batteries, allowing them to cover the necessary distance.
Despite the scale of the launch, the attack resulted in minimal damage. Flesch stated that only a few drones managed to reach Kyiv, and none caused significant harm, apart from debris landing in the city center.
He concluded by expressing gratitude for the operation, noting that the deployment of 40 Lancets could have posed a serious threat to Ukrainian military assets and infrastructure, had they been more effective.
Russia's recent drone attack on Kyiv, involving 40 Lancet drones, appears to have been more about propaganda than military effectiveness. Despite the scale of the operation, the attack resulted in minimal damage, highlighting the challenges faced by Russian forces in achieving their objectives.
