Russia Halts Recruitment of Kenyan Citizens for Ukraine Conflict

Russia has agreed to cease the recruitment of Kenyan citizens for participation in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, following concerns raised by various African nations regarding the involvement of their citizens in the war.

Kenyan Prime Minister Musalia Mudavadi confirmed this development, stating, “I want to make it clear that we have reached an agreement that Kenyans will no longer be recruited through the Ministry of Defense.” He further emphasized that Kenyan citizens would no longer be eligible for conscription or participation in special operations.

In response, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov noted that Kenyans already fighting alongside Russian forces are serving on a voluntary basis, in accordance with Russian law. He added that the contracts signed by these individuals allow for early termination.

Other African nations have also expressed concerns regarding their citizens’ involvement in the conflict. South Africa reported the deaths of two of its citizens in combat, while Botswana is seeking information on three individuals who were recruited by the Russian military.

Reports from various governments indicate that some individuals were misled into accepting positions in Russia under the guise of civilian employment.

The recruitment of African nationals for military engagement in Ukraine has been a common practice for Russia. Such offers are frequently framed as opportunities for training or legitimate work.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha previously stated that over 1,700 citizens from African countries are currently serving in Russian military units involved in the Ukraine conflict.

In light of reports concerning the deaths of African nationals within the Russian military, several countries, including Kenya, Ghana, and South Africa, have demanded explanations from Moscow regarding the recruitment of their citizens.

Russia has stopped recruiting Kenyan citizens for the Ukraine conflict, addressing concerns from African nations about their citizens' involvement. This decision follows reports of fatalities among African nationals in the Russian military, prompting demands for accountability from several countries.
