Ukraine has enacted sanctions against ten Russian Paralympians for their involvement in the ongoing conflict with Russia. This latest round of restrictions also targets companies and individuals from Russia and Iran that support the aggressor state’s military-industrial complex.
The sanctioned athletes have been accused of promoting Russian propaganda and utilizing sporting events to legitimize Russian military actions and occupation in Ukraine.
The sanctions package concerning the military-industrial sector includes 130 individuals and 48 legal entities. Among those listed is a company involved in supplying components for the “Kometa” series of satellite navigation equipment, which is essential for Russian drones, cruise missiles, ballistic missiles, and guided munitions used in attacks on Ukrainian cities.
Additionally, the sanctions encompass enterprises linked to the production of the “Oreshnik” missile system. The list also includes Iranian companies and citizens involved in the manufacturing of Iranian drones and missiles, which are deployed not only against Ukraine but also in the Middle East.
These entities have facilitated the launch and expansion of the production of “Shahed” drones in Russia. Sanctions have also been applied to Iranian instructors who trained Russian operators of these drones, which have targeted Ukrainian cities and energy infrastructure.
Recently, Ukrainian intelligence, in collaboration with partners, uncovered a significant scheme aimed at legitimizing Russian military personnel within the international Paralympic movement. The Main Directorate of Intelligence of Ukraine, alongside the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the Center for Counteracting Disinformation, revealed data on Russian athletes who entered Paralympic sports through rehabilitation programs for participants of the so-called “Special Military Operation”.
Numerous soldiers involved in assaults on Kyiv, Avdiivka, and Popasna are now officially listed in the sports teams of the aggressor nation. This strategy appears to be an attempt by Russia to integrate former combatants who sustained disabilities during the aggression against Ukraine into the global sports community.
Ukrainian intelligence has also disclosed information regarding six Russian Paralympic athletes who directly participated in the war against Ukraine.
Ukraine has imposed sanctions on Russian Paralympians linked to military actions, alongside measures against companies from Russia and Iran supporting military efforts. This reflects ongoing attempts to counter the legitimization of military personnel within international sports.
