On Saturday morning, March 14, emergency power outages were initiated in Kyiv, as reported by DTEK, the energy provider. The company indicated that the usual outage schedules are currently suspended due to the situation.
According to DTEK’s press service, the National Energy Company of Ukraine (Ukrenergo) ordered these emergency measures. Residents are urged to conserve electricity where possible to assist in stabilizing the energy system.
The backdrop to these outages includes ongoing military operations by Russian forces, who have been targeting Ukrainian cities and civilian infrastructure with various types of weaponry, including drones, missiles, and multiple rocket launch systems. This has raised significant concerns regarding the safety and well-being of the civilian population.
Ukrainian authorities and international organizations have categorized these attacks as war crimes, asserting that they are deliberate in nature. The strikes on essential services, including electricity, heating, and water supply, are viewed as efforts to undermine the basic living conditions of the population.
Furthermore, the Ukrainian government has described these actions as indicative of genocidal behavior, aimed at depriving civilians of necessary resources for survival.
In response, the Russian government has denied allegations that its military is intentionally targeting civilian infrastructure, claiming that its operations are focused on military objectives. However, the impact on civilian life, including the destruction of hospitals, schools, and energy facilities, continues to be a pressing concern.
Emergency power outages have been implemented in Kyiv due to ongoing military attacks on infrastructure. Ukrainian authorities classify these strikes as war crimes, while Russia denies targeting civilians.
