U.S. Launches Major Airstrike on Iranian Military Assets in Strategic Oil Terminal

On March 14, President Donald Trump announced a significant airstrike conducted by U.S. forces against military targets on Khark Island, a key oil terminal for Iran. The strike, described as one of the largest in Middle Eastern history, reportedly left the island’s oil infrastructure intact but destroyed all military objectives.

Trump shared details of the operation on Truth Social, emphasizing that the Central Command (CENTCOM) executed the mission as part of a broader U.S.-Israeli campaign against Iran. He referred to Khark Island as a “pearl” of Iran.

“For the sake of decency, I decided NOT to destroy the oil infrastructure on the island,” Trump stated.

However, he warned that should Iran or any other entity obstruct maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, he would reconsider this decision. Trump reiterated his stance that Iran must not acquire nuclear weapons, asserting that it poses a threat to both the U.S. and the Middle East.

Khark Island is situated approximately 25 kilometers off the Iranian coast and is crucial for the country’s oil exports, with reports indicating that around 90% of Iran’s oil passes through its terminal. Despite ongoing conflict, the island had remained untouched until this recent airstrike.

The military operation is part of escalating tensions between the U.S. and Iran, which intensified following an Israeli attack on Tehran on February 28. Trump characterized the U.S. military’s actions as a “major combat operation” aimed at neutralizing threats posed by the Iranian regime, which he accused of supporting militant groups across the region.

In response to the U.S. actions, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced retaliatory measures, including missile launches towards Israel and attacks on U.S. bases in Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE.

As the situation unfolds, French President Emmanuel Macron has called for an urgent United Nations Security Council meeting, while the European Union reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring regional security and stability in the Middle East.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed support for the Iranian populace, advocating for the removal of the “terrorist regime” to ensure the safety of those affected by Iranian aggression.

On March 1, the IRGC announced the initiation of a significant offensive against Israel and U.S. military installations. Trump responded by urging the Iranian regime to abandon its plans, threatening a severe retaliatory strike.

On March 2, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio indicated that the next phase of military action against Iran would be even more destructive. By March 6, Trump called for a complete overhaul of Iran’s leadership, suggesting he had potential candidates for a “good leader.”

On March 8, Iran’s Assembly of Experts elected Mojtaba Khamenei, son of the late Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, as the third supreme leader of the Islamic Republic. Trump declined to comment on this development, stating only, “We will see what happens.” Previously, he had suggested that the new leader would struggle to maintain power without U.S. approval.

The U.S. has conducted a significant airstrike on Khark Island, targeting military assets while sparing oil infrastructure. This operation marks a pivotal moment in escalating U.S.-Iran tensions, with broader implications for regional stability.
