Shakhtar Donetsk made a strong start in the UEFA playoff round, defeating Lech Poznań 3-1 in their first leg match held in Poznań, Poland.
The scoring began in the 36th minute when Marlon Gomes capitalized on a pass from Cavani Elias to put Shakhtar ahead. Shortly after halftime, a defensive miscommunication by Lech allowed Neverton to extend Shakhtar’s lead.
Lech managed to bring some excitement back into the match in the 70th minute, with Swedish forward Mikael Ishak finding the net. However, Shakhtar sealed their victory in the 85th minute when Isaki Silva, who had come on as a substitute for Neverton, executed a stunning overhead kick.
The second leg of the matchup will take place on March 19, also in Poland, but in Kraków, where Shakhtar will look to secure their advancement in the tournament.
