The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has reported that approximately 3.2 million Iranians have been displaced within their country due to escalating violence. This alarming figure reflects the precarious situation faced by many families as they flee conflict zones.
According to preliminary estimates, between 600,000 and 1 million Iranian households are currently affected, with many seeking refuge in rural areas, particularly in the northern regions of Iran. Major urban centers like Tehran have seen significant outflows of residents as safety concerns mount.
UNHCR officials have warned that the number of displaced individuals is likely to increase as hostilities persist, indicating a growing humanitarian crisis. “This figure is expected to continue rising as fighting continues, highlighting a troubling escalation of humanitarian needs,” the agency stated.
In a related context, a joint operation by the United States and Israel targeting Iran began on February 28, resulting in the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and numerous other high-ranking officials.
