The Bank of England has announced that its upcoming series of banknotes will showcase British wildlife, moving away from historical figures. This decision aims to highlight the natural beauty of the United Kingdom while making counterfeiting more difficult.
According to the bank, public consultations will take place this summer to gather opinions on which animals, plants, and landscapes should be depicted. The initiative reflects a shift in focus, celebrating a significant aspect of British identity.
“For over 50 years, the Bank has proudly featured many inspiring historical figures on its banknotes, shaping national thought, innovation, leadership, and values. The change to wildlife imagery, supported by public consultations and feedback, allows us to celebrate another important facet of the UK,” stated the bank in its press release.
In July 2025, the Bank sought community input on themes for the next series of banknote designs. Participants could choose from six categories: notable historical figures, nature, architecture and landmarks, art, culture and sports, significant milestones, and innovation. Additionally, respondents were encouraged to propose their own ideas. Out of 44,000 responses, nature emerged as the most popular choice, selected by 60% of participants.
The Bank of England plans to replace historical figures on its banknotes with depictions of British wildlife, emphasizing the country's natural heritage. Public consultations will guide the selection process for the new designs, which have garnered significant interest from the community.
