The resolution of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine is taking longer than anticipated, according to US President Donald Trump. However, officials in Washington remain hopeful for a breakthrough.
US Special Representative for Ukraine, Kurt Volker, indicated that negotiations involving Ukraine, Russia, and the United States were scheduled for this week but have been postponed. “The process is moving forward. I believe the trilateral meeting will be rescheduled for some time next week. We are optimistic and will maintain a positive outlook. This war needs to end, and we will keep a positive attitude,” he stated.
Discussing the potential for concluding the conflict this year, Volker noted that Trump is making significant strides towards resolving such issues. “We are seeing signs that both sides are fatigued and exhausted. I hope this marks the beginning of a turning point. A similar situation occurred in the Middle East when we sensed that the parties were tired of the conflict. Let us hope we are at that point now or will be soon,” he added.
Previously, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced a new trilateral meeting with Russian and US representatives was planned for March 10-11 in Turkey. However, this meeting has been postponed at the request of the US side.
Volker clarified that the possibility of rescheduling the event for next week is under consideration, with Switzerland also being a potential venue, depending on the situation in the Middle East.
Key agenda items for the talks include humanitarian issues and preparations for a meeting at the leadership level.
The postponement of trilateral talks involving the US, Ukraine, and Russia reflects ongoing challenges in resolving the conflict. US officials express cautious optimism for a forthcoming breakthrough as both sides show signs of fatigue.
