Ukrainian para biathlete Dmitro Suyarko secured a bronze medal in the individual race for visually impaired athletes at the 2026 Paralympic Games. Competing against a strong field, Suyarko finished 2:19.2 minutes behind China’s Hesun Dan, who took the gold.
Following the race, Suyarko shared his thoughts with Suspilne Sport, reflecting on his second event of the Games. Earlier, the 29-year-old athlete had placed fifth in the sprint competition.
In addition to biathlon, Suyarko also participates in para cross-country skiing. He admitted that the individual race is his least favorite event, even contemplating whether to participate at all.
- Unexpected Medal in Individual Race
“Honestly, it was quite unexpected because I was not keen on starting today. However, after some consideration, we decided that the distance was manageable, and I could take my time shooting, unlike yesterday. We executed our plan, and the result was fantastic. Before I completed my last shooting round, I asked not to be informed about my standing. After the last round, my guide told me we were in fourth place, just two seconds from third. We pushed hard, and it all worked out. I’m very happy with the outcome,” Suyarko stated.
- Motivation to Compete
“Like many Ukrainians, my family and friends are currently on the front lines. A relative texted me yesterday, saying, ‘Dima, Donbas is watching you compete.’ That hit me right in the heart. I couldn’t let them down. It was a huge motivation, and I want to thank every soldier and everyone involved in defending our borders for their sacrifices that allow us to be here. Thank you so much for that.”
- Reluctance to Compete in the Individual Race
“This is my least favorite distance. I don’t perform at my best in biathlon, and the individual race is particularly challenging for me. But today, everything changed, thanks to God and the circumstances.”
Dmitro Suyarko earned a bronze medal in the individual race at the 2026 Paralympics, overcoming his reluctance to compete in this event. His performance was fueled by motivation from loved ones on the front lines, highlighting the emotional significance of his achievement.
