Russian Strikes in Kherson Result in Fatalities and Injuries

On March 5, Russian military forces launched artillery and drone attacks in Kherson, leading to the death of one individual and injuring four others, according to local officials.

Alexander Prokudin, the head of the regional military administration, reported that a 79-year-old man died from injuries sustained in his home, which was struck during the assault. The Kherson regional prosecutor’s office confirmed that the attacks caused injuries to four additional people.

Authorities noted that the strikes damaged residential buildings, a school, and vehicles in the area. This incident is part of a broader pattern of attacks by Russian forces, which frequently target Ukrainian cities and civilian infrastructure using various weaponry, including drones and artillery.

Ukrainian officials and international organizations have classified these attacks as war crimes, asserting that they are deliberate in nature. They emphasize that the bombardments aim to disrupt essential services, including electricity, heating, water supply, and medical assistance, thereby creating conditions that some legal experts characterize as genocidal actions.

Legal scholars and human rights advocates argue that the ongoing war has seen Russia commit acts that could be defined as genocide against the Ukrainian population. They cite several indicators, including:

  • Public declarations by Russian officials denying the existence of Ukrainians as an ethnic group.
  • Targeted attacks on infrastructure critical for civilian survival.
  • Persecution of pro-Ukrainian individuals in occupied territories.
  • Efforts to eradicate Ukrainian culture and identity.
  • Forced deportations of children to Russia, aimed at altering their identity.

The 1948 United Nations Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide obligates signatory nations to prevent and punish acts of genocide in both wartime and peacetime. Currently, 149 countries are parties to this convention, which defines genocide as actions intended to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnic, racial, or religious group.

Indicators of genocide include the killing or causing serious bodily harm to members of a group, deliberately inflicting conditions calculated to destroy the group, and public incitement to commit such acts. Despite these allegations, Russian leadership continues to deny that its military targets civilian infrastructure or causes civilian casualties during the ongoing conflict.

Recent Russian strikes in Kherson have resulted in one death and multiple injuries, further intensifying concerns over targeted attacks on civilians. Authorities classify these actions as war crimes, with implications of genocidal intent against the Ukrainian population.
