In the early hours of March 3, Russian forces launched a significant drone attack on Ukraine, deploying a total of 136 strike drones. Ukrainian air defense systems successfully intercepted 127 of these drones, illustrating the ongoing conflict’s intensity and the strategic importance of aerial defense.
The assault began around 6:00 PM on March 2 and involved various types of drones, including the Iranian-made Shahed, Gerbera, Italmas, and others. Approximately 80 of the drones were identified as Shahed models. The launches originated from multiple locations, including Kursk, Primorsko-Akhtarsk in Russia, and the temporarily occupied region of Crimea.
Ukrainian air defense forces employed a multi-faceted approach to counter the attack. This included the use of aviation, anti-aircraft missile systems, electronic warfare units, drone units, and mobile fire groups. By 9:00 AM, reports indicated that the Ukrainian forces had neutralized or suppressed 127 enemy drones across the northern, southern, and eastern parts of the country.
Despite the high interception rate, five drones managed to strike three locations, causing damage. Additionally, debris from the intercepted drones fell in three other areas, raising safety concerns. Ukrainian military officials warned citizens to remain vigilant, stating, “The attack is ongoing, and several enemy drones remain in the airspace. Please adhere to safety regulations!”
The March 3 attack specifically targeted several Ukrainian regions, including Kharkiv, where debris from a downed drone damaged windows in residential buildings and several vehicles. In the Odesa region, the assault affected port and transportation infrastructure, damaging cargo warehouses and administrative buildings, though no injuries were reported.
In the Dnipropetrovsk region, air defense units successfully destroyed 13 strike drones, with no reports of damage or casualties from local authorities. However, in Poltava, debris from enemy drones resulted in injuries to four individuals, who sustained moderate injuries, and damaged surrounding buildings.
A recent drone attack by Russian forces on Ukraine saw the interception of 127 out of 136 drones by Ukrainian air defense. While the majority were neutralized, some managed to inflict damage across various regions, highlighting the ongoing conflict's challenges.
