Survey Reveals Ukrainian Skepticism Towards Ongoing Peace Talks with Russia and the U.S.

A recent survey conducted by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology indicates that a significant majority of Ukrainians remain doubtful about the effectiveness of current peace negotiations involving Russia and the United States. The study, carried out from February 12 to February 24, 2026, found that 70% of respondents do not believe these discussions will lead to a lasting peace.

Only 25% of those surveyed expressed optimism that the negotiations could result in a sustainable resolution to the ongoing conflict, while 5% were undecided. This level of skepticism has remained unchanged since January 2026, suggesting a consistent sentiment among the population regarding the peace process.

According to sociologists, the lack of faith in the negotiations is primarily attributed to perceptions of Russia’s stance. Many Ukrainians view the current talks critically, influenced by ongoing military pressures and reports of Russian aggression, including attacks on civilians and attempts to disrupt essential services during winter. Anton Grushetsky, the executive director of the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology, noted that the prevailing sentiment is one of caution, with many Ukrainians believing that any potential Russian willingness to end the war would come only under terms that would effectively amount to Ukraine’s capitulation.

Despite their skepticism, Ukrainians are open to discussing difficult compromises, provided these do not require surrender. The survey highlights a complex landscape of public opinion, where a desire for peace coexists with a deep mistrust of Russia’s intentions.

The survey, titled “Omnibus,” involved 2,004 respondents aged 18 and older, all residing in government-controlled areas of Ukraine. It utilized a random sampling method through mobile phone numbers, ensuring a representative cross-section of the population. The statistical margin of error for the sample size is approximately 4.1%, although this may be influenced by additional systematic biases due to the ongoing conflict.

A survey reveals that 70% of Ukrainians doubt the effectiveness of current peace talks with Russia and the U.S., reflecting deep skepticism rooted in ongoing conflict dynamics. While some express hope for compromise, many view negotiations as unlikely to yield a just resolution.
