Russia has not officially disclosed its military losses, with the last reported figure of 5,937 fatalities coming in September 2022.
On February 24, 2026, journalists identified over 200,000 Russian military personnel who have died since the onset of the war, using open-source data such as obituaries, social media posts, and announcements regarding missing persons.
Estimates of total Russian casualties, including both wounded and killed, are significantly higher according to international organizations and intelligence agencies. A NATO official, speaking anonymously in December 2025, indicated that the total number of Russian military casualties could be nearing 1.15 million.
Meanwhile, Ukraine has been reticent about its own losses, with President Volodymyr Zelensky stating that details would be released after the conflict. However, he has begun to disclose information approximately once a year. In an interview with France 2 in early February 2026, Zelensky mentioned that Ukraine has lost 55,000 soldiers since February 2022.
“The official number of soldiers killed in Ukraine, whether professional or mobilized, stands at 55,000,” Zelensky stated, adding that there are also “a large number of individuals whom Ukraine considers missing.”
Ukrainian Armed Forces Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi noted on January 13, 2026, that the military had managed to reduce personnel losses by 13% in 2025, though he did not provide specific details on Ukrainian casualties.
Recent reports from the Ukrainian General Staff indicate that Russian military losses have reached over 1.26 million personnel since the invasion began. Meanwhile, Ukraine's own losses have been officially stated at 55,000 soldiers, with ongoing assessments of both sides' casualties revealing a complex and evolving situation.
