Ukraine Responds to Media Controversy Over Award to German Foreign Minister

Ukraine has addressed a media controversy following reports that labeled the award given to German Foreign Minister Johannes Wadephul as “second-rate.” The award in question is the Order of Merit of Ukraine, Second Class, which was recently bestowed upon Wadephul.

The controversy began when the German news agency dpa characterized the award as inferior, comparing it to the First Class Order of Merit received by Germany’s Minister of Defense Boris Pistorius in 2024. This comparison sparked a wave of similar reports across various media outlets, amplifying the issue.

In response, Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Georgiy Tikhiy stated that dpa did not seek comment from the Ukrainian Ministry, leading to misunderstandings. He described the media’s conclusion as simply incorrect.

Tikhiy emphasized that comparing two German politicians who received state awards at different times and under different circumstances is fundamentally flawed. He suggested that a more appropriate comparison would involve examining how other European foreign ministers and state officials have been honored in recent months.

He noted that in the past six months, several foreign ministers, including Latvia’s Baiba Braže, Norway’s Espen Barth Eide, and Croatia’s Gordan Grlić Radman, have also received the Second Class Order of Merit. He further thanked Wadephul for his exceptional personal contributions to supporting Ukraine and maintaining peace in Europe.

The spokesperson reiterated that the award is intended to recognize Wadephul’s significant role in these efforts.

Additionally, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry has recently had to respond to various controversial statements from European leaders. For instance, the Ministry strongly reacted to remarks made by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán regarding the cessation of Russian gas transit, likening Orbán’s rhetoric to that of “drug addicts” demanding further concessions.

Furthermore, the Ministry addressed joint criticisms from Orbán and Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, asserting that the era of ultimatums in relations with Ukraine has passed. Recent analyses have explored the motivations behind Orbán and Fico’s renewed attacks on Ukraine and the political objectives they aim to achieve through these statements.
