Ukraine has put forward several practical solutions to address its ongoing oil dispute with Hungary, urging Budapest to refrain from politicizing the issue domestically. This announcement was made by Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, as reported by Politico.
The conflict escalated when Hungary blocked a €90 billion EU loan intended for Ukraine. This funding was part of a collective debt initiative requiring unanimous approval from all 27 EU member states, effectively halting the process due to Hungary’s stance.
Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó indicated that his country would continue to block the loan until Ukraine resumes the transit of Russian oil through the Druzhba pipeline.
In response, Sybiha emphasized Ukraine’s readiness for constructive dialogue, stating that Kyiv has already proposed multiple realistic solutions to the situation. He expressed hope for a collaborative approach from Budapest.
Sybiha also raised concerns about the motives behind Hungary’s actions, suggesting that the relationship with Ukraine is being exploited for internal political gain ahead of upcoming elections. He insisted that Budapest should stop involving Ukraine in its domestic political issues.
Furthermore, he mentioned that Kyiv has repeatedly suggested a direct meeting between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán to normalize relations, but has yet to receive a response. Instead, he noted, Hungary has chosen a path of public ultimatums and intimidation.
Ukraine is actively seeking to resolve its oil dispute with Hungary, proposing various solutions while calling for a halt to the politicization of the issue. The ongoing blockage of EU financial support by Hungary complicates the situation further, with both sides urged to engage in direct dialogue.
