Police Arrest Suspect After Grenade Attack on Officers in Ukraine

Authorities in Ukraine have apprehended a man following an incident in which he allegedly threw a grenade at a police vehicle in the town of Storozhynets, located in the Chernivtsi region. The attack occurred on the evening prior to the arrest and resulted in injuries to two police officers.

The injured officers include a 23-year-old member of the rapid response unit, who is currently hospitalized in serious condition, and a 31-year-old police driver, who sustained minor injuries but is not in life-threatening danger.

The suspect, a 48-year-old resident of Storozhynets and a former military serviceman, was located after a thorough search of his residence, where additional weapons and ammunition were seized. According to Viktor Nechytaylo, the head of the police department in Chernivtsi, law enforcement mobilized all necessary resources to swiftly identify and detain the suspect. During the arrest, he reportedly resisted authorities while holding an explosive device and was found with several other rounds of ammunition.

Details regarding the motives behind the suspect’s actions remain unclear, and he has not yet provided any comments. The police have initiated a preliminary investigation under charges related to the attempted murder of law enforcement officers and illegal handling of weapons, ammunition, or explosives. Authorities are currently determining the appropriate charges and potential preventive measures against the suspect.
