Ukraine’s Athletes Compete in Ski Jumping and Alpine Events at 2026 Olympics

On the thirteenth day of the 2026 Winter Olympics, Ukrainian athletes faced challenges in both ski jumping and alpine skiing events. The Ukrainian ski jumpers concluded the first round in last place, trailing the leaders from Germany by a significant margin of 2 minutes and 36 seconds.

The second round of the ski jumping competition is scheduled to commence at 15:00, featuring a sprint in a relay format where Ukrainian competitors will participate.

Live coverage is available for the only event for Ukraine today, which includes the team competition in ski jumping from the large hill. Ukrainian athletes Oleksandr Shumbarets and Dmytro Mazurchuk are representing their country in this event.

Additionally, live broadcasts of the alpine skiing qualifications for both men and women are set to take place, with the women’s event starting at 10:50 and the men’s at 11:30. Viewers can watch the live stream on Suspilne Sport’s website.

In short track speed skating, Ukrainian athlete Handei achieved historic results, competing in the B final of the 1500 meters and advancing to the quarter-finals of the 500 meters despite a fall. Handei cited inspiration from renowned Ukrainian poet Lina Kostenko, although he had to cover her quote on his helmet due to International Skating Union regulations. He expressed his feelings about the Olympics using words from American astronaut Neil Armstrong.

“Many quotes can be attributed to Lina Kostenko and other poets I admire. It is unjust from the international Olympic committee’s side, especially since we have seen how events unfold, allowing Paralympians from Russia and Belarus to compete with national symbols. For me, this Olympics showed that there is still much to work on and think about for improvement. It was a small leap for me, but a significant step for my team, my city, and my federation towards the future and the development of short track,”

In alpine skiing, Mikaela Shiffrin ended her medal drought at the Olympics by winning gold in the slalom, dedicating her victory to her late father. Shiffrin, who holds the record for the most World Cup titles in skiing, had faced challenges in previous Olympic competitions, including failing to finish in any of her events at the last Olympics.

“This is a moment I dreamed of and feared at the same time. Everything that happens in life after losing someone you love becomes a new experience. It feels like being reborn. I often resist the thought of living without my dad. Perhaps today, for the first time, I accepted this reality,”

Ukrainian athletes faced tough competition on the thirteenth day of the 2026 Winter Olympics, with ski jumpers finishing last and Mikaela Shiffrin finally securing a gold medal in slalom. Handei's achievements in short track speed skating also marked significant milestones for Ukraine.
