Slovakia Considers Additional F-16V Fighters Following MiG-29 Transfer to Ukraine

Slovakia is contemplating the acquisition of four additional F-16V Block 70/72 Viper fighter jets. This decision follows the transfer of its entire fleet of MiG-29 aircraft to the Ukrainian Air Force, which has created gaps in the nation’s defense capabilities.

Prime Minister Robert Fico announced the potential expansion of the air force after a recent visit to the United States. According to reports from Defence Industry Europe, Bratislava has submitted a request for the delivery of four to eight aircraft, aiming for a swift acquisition.

Previously, Deputy Prime Minister Robert Kalinak indicated that the U.S. State Department had approved the sale. However, as of now, there is no public information available on the Defense Security Cooperation Agency’s (DSCA) resources regarding this matter.

This situation has sparked discussions among experts, who speculate that Slovakia’s initiative could be aimed at strengthening collaboration with Washington in light of the shifting security landscape in Central Europe.

Concerns regarding delivery timelines have also been raised. Analysts from Defense Express point out the risks of delays, referencing a 2018 contract in which Slovakia expected the delivery of 14 aircraft to take over five years instead of the initially planned four.

Moreover, Lockheed Martin’s production facilities are currently occupied with orders from other nations, including Taiwan. Experts suggest that claims of expedited deliveries may pertain to the fulfillment of prior orders rather than the procurement of entirely new aircraft.

Slovakia is exploring the purchase of additional F-16V fighters after transferring its MiG-29s to Ukraine, raising concerns about defense capabilities and delivery timelines. The initiative reflects a potential shift in defense collaboration with the U.S. amid changing security dynamics in the region.
