Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has once again claimed that Ukraine is meddling in the country’s electoral process and allegedly funding his political opponents. Orban stated that the outcomes of the elections are of significant concern to Ukrainians, prompting their involvement in the campaign.
“We are grounded in common sense, so this should not surprise us. The President of Ukraine and Ukraine itself will be active participants in these elections, and we must defeat them as well,” Orban remarked.
He further asserted that Ukrainians are engaging in the campaign with full force and resources. Additionally, Orban accused Ukraine of financially supporting his rivals, claiming, “I know how this is happening.”
Political analysts suggest that Orban’s rule and that of his Fidesz party could be nearing an end, particularly with upcoming elections in April where he may face a challenge from the pro-European opposition party, Tisza.
In the lead-up to the elections, Orban has launched an extensive information campaign against his main opponent, Peter Madiar, employing aggressive rhetoric and propaganda. A significant aspect of his campaign has been the portrayal of Ukraine as an adversary.
Orban has previously stated that Budapest will not support Ukraine’s accession to the European Union for the foreseeable future. He has also made controversial remarks regarding the war, questioning who initiated the conflict. Furthermore, he has publicly accused Ukraine of attempting to deprive Hungary of access to affordable Russian energy supplies, which he claims could lead to increased costs for Hungarian consumers.
Hungary's Prime Minister Viktor Orban has accused Ukraine of interfering in the upcoming elections by supporting his opponents. This rhetoric is part of a broader strategy as he faces potential challenges from pro-European parties, raising questions about his political future.
