Ukraine Pushes for EU Membership Amidst Opposition at Munich Security Conference

During the Munich Security Conference, discussions focused on accelerating Ukraine’s accession to the European Union, as highlighted by Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha during a press briefing.

Sybiha noted that while the process could advance more swiftly, Hungary’s opposition is a significant hurdle. He criticized Hungary’s stance, which he claims obstructs Ukraine’s efforts toward EU integration. He emphasized that Europe recognizes Ukraine’s potential contributions to the EU, including enhancing security and strengthening political, diplomatic, and economic positions.

He stated, “The most important thing now is to establish clear timelines for Ukraine’s EU membership.”

Additionally, Portugal’s Foreign Minister indicated that a formal accession could be possible by 2027.

European Commissioner for Enlargement, Olivér Várhelyi, commented that Ukraine’s EU membership is traditionally viewed as a security guarantee and may be discussed in the context of future peace agreements. One aspect of the ongoing 20-point peace plan between Ukraine and the U.S., as well as between the U.S. and Russia, includes Ukraine’s EU membership, reportedly anticipated for 2027.

However, skepticism remains within the EU regarding this timeline. Várhelyi previously stated in January that he could not assure Ukraine’s membership by 2027, despite notable progress in negotiations. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz also expressed doubts about the feasibility of Ukraine joining the EU in the near future.

At the Munich Security Conference, Ukraine's Foreign Minister highlighted the challenges of EU accession due to Hungary's opposition. While discussions continue, skepticism remains about the proposed timeline for membership.
