Resilience Amidst Conflict: The Story of a Ukrainian Family’s Survival

In the midst of war-torn Ukraine, the story of Vyacheslav and Valeria Kuchkovsky highlights the enduring power of love and human connection. Both hailing from Mariupol, they faced unimaginable challenges, yet managed to preserve their relationship and family unity despite the devastation around them.

Vyacheslav, a former police major and now a border guard, endured 21 months of captivity, losing significant weight and facing harrowing experiences. Valeria, a police officer, risked her life to evacuate their son and crucial documents from besieged Mariupol, ultimately rebuilding their lives in Mukachevo.

Shared Background in Law Enforcement

The couple’s bond was forged in their shared experiences within the police force in Mariupol. Vyacheslav, originally from Sartana, had dedicated his career to criminal investigations, while Valeria was born and raised in Mariupol. Their military training and law enforcement backgrounds instilled a sense of discipline and resilience in their relationship.

“It gives you greater endurance; if someone is late or there’s an emergency call, everyone understands and no one creates drama,” they noted.

In 2013, Vyacheslav left the police force to focus on family life as Valeria was expecting their first child. They established a routine of morning walks along the coast, cherishing family time. However, in 2019, he returned to service, this time with the State Border Guard Service, working as a driver near the front lines.

Foreboding Signs Before the Invasion

As tensions escalated in February 2022, both Vyacheslav and Valeria sensed impending danger but remained hopeful that the situation would resolve peacefully. Vyacheslav recalled, “Ten days before the invasion, I saw personnel files being removed from our unit. It was clear something was about to happen, but we didn’t expect it to escalate so drastically.”

They initially evacuated to Valeria’s parents’ home, believing the outskirts of Mariupol would be safer. After a brief reunion on March 13, communication ceased as the city fell under siege.

Valeria and their son managed to escape Mariupol at the end of April, finding refuge with acquaintances and eventually reaching Kryvyi Rih, where she reestablished contact with Vyacheslav.

Life in Captivity and the Struggle to Stay Connected

Vyacheslav was captured during the defense of Mariupol and held in Olenivka, a notorious prison for Ukrainian soldiers. He described the conditions, stating, “We were in barracks with 200 people. I didn’t work; instead, I read books and played games to survive.”

Valeria, meanwhile, focused on rebuilding their lives, finding work, and ensuring their son’s education. She maintained hope for Vyacheslav’s safe return, believing in his resilience and survival skills.

On May 9, Vyacheslav managed to contact Valeria via Starlink, sending flowers for her birthday, despite being in captivity. This small gesture provided her with hope amidst uncertainty.

Return and Rebuilding

Vyacheslav was released in June following a prisoner exchange. Valeria received the news just before the exchange, prompting her to rush to Kyiv with their son. Their reunion was filled with emotion, marking the beginning of a new chapter in their lives.

After his release, Vyacheslav underwent rehabilitation and was assigned to the border guard unit in Mukachevo. The couple now navigates the challenges of post-war life together, focusing on their family and the future.

Despite losing their home and possessions in Mariupol, they emphasize the importance of their relationship. Valeria stated, “What matters most is that we are together, raising our son, and cherishing each day.”

Vyacheslav echoed this sentiment, highlighting the significance of trust and support in their marriage. He expressed concern for those who return from captivity to find their families have disintegrated.

As they adapt to their new life, the Kuchkovsky family strives to create joyful moments, engaging in activities together and appreciating the present. Their story serves as a testament to the resilience of the human spirit in the face of adversity.
