Ukraine’s Military Leaders Face Allegations of Treason Over Kerch Strait Incident

Allegations of state treason are reportedly being prepared against several prominent Ukrainian officials, including Admiral Ihor Voronchenko, former National Security and Defense Secretary Oleksandr Turchynov, and ex-President Petro Poroshenko. These accusations stem from their decisions regarding the passage of Ukrainian military vessels through the Kerch Strait.

The claims were made by Victoria Syumar, a member of the European Solidarity faction, who shared the information on Facebook. She emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating, “Treason is being pinned on Admiral Voronchenko, Oleksandr Turchynov, and Petro Poroshenko. Consider this: for the passage of Ukrainian ships in Ukrainian territorial waters…”

Syumar suggested that the timing of these allegations could benefit Moscow and the current Ukrainian administration. She backed her assertions with comments from former MP Oleg Lyashko, who indicated that the prosecutor’s office plans to accuse these officials of treason imminently.

However, Alexander Sokolov, the acting director of the State Bureau of Investigations (DBR), denied the veracity of these claims. In a statement to Ukrainian media, he noted that the bureau had previously received information about such a scenario being used to incite protests in Kyiv. Sokolov confirmed that while a criminal case exists—filed by Andriy Portnov during the tenure of former DBR head Roman Truba—no procedural actions regarding charges are currently planned.

The Prosecutor General’s Office echoed this sentiment, labeling the circulating news about potential charges as a clear fabrication. They acknowledged that the DBR is indeed investigating the matter but clarified that no actions related to charges or accusations are underway at this time.

In light of these developments, representatives from the Maritime Expert Platform have condemned the potential accusations against Admiral Voronchenko as nothing more than a politically motivated attack against him and his military and political leadership.

Allegations of treason against key Ukrainian figures related to military vessel passage through the Kerch Strait have been met with denials from investigative authorities. The situation has sparked political controversy and accusations of a politically motivated campaign.
