Russian Military Casualties in Ukraine Reach Alarming Levels

In January, Russian forces in Ukraine experienced a significant increase in casualties, losing approximately 9,000 more personnel than they were able to recruit, according to Bloomberg, citing sources from the Institute for the Study of War and the Critical Threats Project at the American Enterprise Institute.

Reports indicate that Russian military deaths in December reached around 35,000, a number that is nearly double the average monthly casualty rate projected by NATO for 2025. While recruitment levels in December matched the losses, January marked a clear shortfall, highlighting the challenges facing the Russian military.

Overall casualties in the nearly four-year conflict between Russia and Ukraine are approaching two million, as reported by the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS). This figure includes approximately 1.8 million individuals who have been killed, wounded, or are missing, with 1.2 million from Russia and 600,000 from Ukraine.

“These numbers are staggering. No leading country has suffered such losses in any conflict since World War II,”

CSIS emphasized in their analysis.

The center’s estimates reveal that the Russian military has sustained 17 times more casualties in the current conflict than the Soviet Union did during the Afghan War, and 11 times more than during both Chechen wars.

Russian military casualties in Ukraine have surged, with January losses surpassing recruitment efforts. The total casualties in the conflict are nearing two million, raising concerns about the unprecedented scale of losses.
