COVID-19 Update: Global Death Toll Reaches 200,000; Ukraine Faces Rising Cases and Protests

As of April 26, 2020, the global death toll from COVID-19 has surpassed 200,000, with confirmed cases reaching nearly 2.9 million worldwide. The situation remains critical, particularly in the United States, Russia, and the United Kingdom, where the number of new infections continues to rise.

In Ukraine, the total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases has reached 8,617, including 1,676 medical workers and 586 children. The country reported 492 new infections in the last 24 hours, with eight fatalities, bringing the total death count to 209. Among the deceased, the majority are individuals over the age of 50.

Health Minister Maksym Stepanov noted that the regions most affected by the virus include Chernivtsi, Ternopil, and Rivne. In the Chernivtsi region, 161 medical personnel have left their positions since the onset of the pandemic, with one doctor reportedly infecting 32 colleagues.

In the military, one new case was reported, bringing the total number of infections in the Armed Forces of Ukraine to 58. Notably, no COVID-19 cases have been detected on the front lines.

In Crimea, the local authorities reported a rise in cases to 69, while Donetsk and occupied areas of Luhansk reported 78 and 70 cases, respectively. A new outbreak has emerged in a dormitory in Zaporizhia, where 11 residents have tested positive.

In response to rising cases, three settlements in the Kherson region will go into quarantine. Meanwhile, a protest erupted in the Chernivtsi detention center when inmates resisted the admission of a COVID-19 patient, leading to three individuals injuring themselves in protest.

Globally, the United States has reported 1,806 deaths in the last day, totaling 53,934 since the pandemic began. New York remains the hardest-hit city, with 17,126 fatalities. The UK also saw a significant rise in deaths, with 813 reported in the last 24 hours, bringing the total to 20,319.

In Wuhan, China, authorities announced that all COVID-19 patients have been discharged from hospitals, marking a significant milestone in the city where the outbreak began. Currently, about 1,000 cases remain in the country.

The World Health Organization has cautioned against issuing “immunity passports” to recovered patients, emphasizing that there is no evidence suggesting immunity from reinfection.

In Italy, several mafia leaders have been released from prison as part of measures to combat the pandemic, sparking criticism from opposition leaders.

The global death toll from COVID-19 has exceeded 200,000, with Ukraine reporting a significant rise in cases and protests in response to health measures. Meanwhile, Wuhan has discharged all COVID-19 patients from hospitals, signaling a turning point in the outbreak's epicenter.
