Ukraine Reports Surge in COVID-19 Cases and Deaths

On April 28, 2020, Ukraine’s Ministry of Health reported a significant rise in COVID-19 cases, with 401 new infections confirmed within the previous day. This uptick also included the highest daily death toll recorded since the onset of the pandemic, with 19 fatalities reported.

As of the latest update, the total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Ukraine reached 9,410, encompassing 639 children and 1,843 healthcare workers. The death toll now stands at 239, comprising 132 men and 107 women. Additionally, 992 individuals have recovered from the virus, including 209 medical professionals.

Currently, 6,430 patients are undergoing outpatient treatment at home, among whom 1,532 are healthcare workers. Hospitalization has been necessary for 2,980 individuals, including 311 medical staff. In the last 24 hours, 147 patients were admitted to healthcare facilities.

Of those hospitalized, 121 patients, including one child and seven healthcare workers, are on mechanical ventilation. To date, Ukraine has conducted 98,719 PCR tests, with 5,200 tests performed in the last day alone.

Health Minister Maksym Stepanov highlighted that the highest number of confirmed cases in the past day occurred in Kyiv (78), Chernivtsi region (54), Ternopil region (52), and Kyiv region (34).

The breakdown of confirmed cases by region is as follows:

  • Vinnytsia region: 406 cases (92 recoveries)
  • Volyn region: 260 cases (52 recoveries)
  • Dnipropetrovsk region: 318 cases (16 recoveries)
  • Donetsk region: 52 cases (10 recoveries)
  • Zhytomyr region: 354 cases (16 recoveries)
  • Transcarpathian region: 387 cases (33 recoveries)
  • Zaporizhzhia region: 208 cases (44 recoveries)
  • Ivano-Frankivsk region: 783 cases (72 recoveries)
  • Kyiv city: 1,298 cases (64 recoveries)
  • Kyiv region: 604 cases (63 recoveries)
  • Kirovohrad region: 356 cases (61 recoveries)
  • Lviv region: 371 cases (58 recoveries)
  • Luhansk region: 32 cases (3 recoveries)
  • Mykolaiv region: 116 cases (3 recoveries)
  • Odesa region: 248 cases (12 recoveries)
  • Poltava region: 180 cases (20 recoveries)
  • Rivne region: 553 cases (46 recoveries)
  • Sumy region: 95 cases (54 recoveries)
  • Ternopil region: 664 cases (74 recoveries)
  • Kharkiv region: 221 cases (17 recoveries)
  • Kherson region: 88 cases (26 recoveries)
  • Khmelnytskyi region: 72 cases (18 recoveries)
  • Cherkasy region: 276 cases (55 recoveries)
  • Chernivtsi region: 1,429 cases (79 recoveries)
  • Chernihiv region: 39 cases (4 recoveries)

Ukraine has reported a notable increase in COVID-19 cases, with 401 new infections and 19 deaths in a single day, marking the highest daily mortality rate since the pandemic began. The total number of confirmed cases has now surpassed 9,400, with significant numbers of recoveries and ongoing hospitalizations.
