Upcoming Negotiations on Ukraine Conflict Set for Geneva

New negotiations involving Ukraine, Russia, and the United States are scheduled to take place in Geneva on February 17 and 18. This announcement was made by the Office of the President of Ukraine on February 13, indicating that the Ukrainian delegation is preparing for the discussions.

Details regarding the negotiations will be clarified by Rustem Umerov, Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine. Earlier, Dmitry Peskov, spokesperson for the Russian president, confirmed that another round of talks aimed at ending the war in Ukraine is planned for the following week, although he did not specify exact dates or locations.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had previously mentioned on February 11 that the next talks with Russia were expected to occur on February 17 or 18 in the United States.

Previous discussions took place in Abu Dhabi on January 23-24 and February 4-5, facilitated by U.S. officials, focusing on potential resolutions to the ongoing conflict. However, these meetings did not yield significant breakthroughs. A notable outcome from the February 5 meeting was an agreement on a prisoner exchange, the first of its kind in five months.

Steve Witkoff, the U.S. Special Envoy, described the discussions on February 4 and 5 as “constructive and focused on creating conditions for lasting peace.” He noted that the talks included discussions on the possibility of a ceasefire.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, following the February 4 negotiations, stated that the list of unresolved issues between Ukraine and Russia regarding a peace agreement has been reduced. However, he acknowledged that the most challenging questions remain, particularly concerning territorial disputes.

Negotiations aimed at resolving the Ukraine conflict are set for February 17-18 in Geneva, following previous talks that yielded limited progress. Key issues remain unresolved, particularly territorial disputes.
