Ukrainian Major Honored with Hero of Ukraine Title for Valor in Defense Operations

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has awarded the title of Hero of Ukraine and presented the Golden Star Order to Major Roman Yashchenko, known by his call sign “Fish,” who serves as the deputy commander of the Lasar’s Group special forces unit within the National Guard.

The decree, numbered 257/2026 and dated March 24, was published on the official website of the President’s Office. It recognizes Yashchenko for his personal bravery and heroism in defending Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as his dedicated service to the Ukrainian people.

“To confer the title of Hero of Ukraine with the Golden Star Order to Roman Serhiyovych Yashchenko – Major,” the document states.

Lasar’s Group’s press service highlighted Yashchenko’s early involvement with the unit, noting that he had a passion for drones before joining the group in the spring of 2022. Initially, he aspired to destroy a single Russian tank, but that goal quickly evolved.

“In civilian life, he was fascinated by drones as a hobby. When he joined the ‘Lazars,’ he had a simple dream—to destroy one Russian tank. But that first tank was just the beginning,” the post explained.

Within the special unit, Yashchenko has reportedly destroyed over 500 pieces of Russian military equipment while serving as a drone pilot. He played a key role in developing various operational aspects of the unit, including FPV (first-person view) technology, and has risen to become a leading officer. Previously, he was awarded the full Cavalier of the Order of Bohdan Khmelnytsky for his contributions to the country.

“The entire Lasar’s Group team congratulates Mr. Roman on this new high honor. Thank you for being with us in this struggle and for continuing to inspire by your example,” they added.

On January 19, President Zelensky appointed Pavel Yelizarov, the head of the Lasar’s Group, as the deputy commander of the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Major Roman Yashchenko has been honored with the Hero of Ukraine title for his significant contributions in the defense of the nation. His achievements include the destruction of over 500 units of enemy military equipment while serving in a special forces unit.
