Continued Hostilities Amidst Proposed Easter Ceasefire in Ukraine

On April 11, Ukrainian defense forces engaged in 120 combat encounters with Russian military units, according to the latest operational report from the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. As of 7 a.m. on April 12, despite a declared ceasefire, there were 2,299 recorded violations of the ceasefire regime.

The report detailed that in the Northern Slobozhansky and Kursk directions, Russian forces launched five attacks on Ukrainian positions, conducting 46 shelling incidents against both military positions and civilian areas, six of which involved the use of multiple rocket launch systems (MRLS). In the Southern Slobozhansky direction, the enemy attempted to breach Ukrainian defenses five times in the vicinity of the settlements of Starytsia, Veterynarne, Prylipka, and Vovchansky Khutory.

In the Kupiansk direction, Russian forces attacked four times targeting the settlements of Petropavlivka and Novoosynove. Meanwhile, in the Sloviansk direction, Ukrainian defenders successfully halted four attempts by Russian troops to advance near Platonivka and towards Rai-Oleksandrivka.

In the Kostiantynivka direction, Russian forces conducted 21 attacks near Kostiantynivka, Pleshchiivka, Illinivka, Ivanopillia, Rusynyi Yar, Sofiivka, and Novopavlivka. The General Staff reported that in the Pokrovsk direction, Ukrainian forces thwarted 22 assault attempts by the Russian military in the areas of Rodynske, Dorožne, Myrnohrad, Udačne, Novomykolaivka, Molodetske, and Novopavlivka.

Earlier, the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Oleksandr Syrskyi, was tasked by the President to ensure adherence to the ceasefire regime, as stated by the General Staff on April 11. This ceasefire is intended to be observed on land, at sea, and in the air during the Easter celebrations.

On the evening of April 9, the Kremlin announced that President Putin had instructed Russian military forces to “halt combat operations across all fronts” from 4 p.m. on April 11 until the end of the day on April 12. However, he also noted that they should remain prepared to “counter potential provocations from the enemy, as well as any aggressive actions.”

In late March, President Zelensky expressed Ukraine’s readiness for an Easter ceasefire, which is celebrated by Orthodox and Greek-Catholic communities on April 12. He also mentioned that Ukraine had submitted a relevant request to the United States. Zelensky stated that it was uncertain whether the U.S. would be able to convey this message to Russia, but Ukraine’s proposal for a ceasefire during Easter remained on the table.

In 2025, Putin unilaterally declared a ceasefire for one and a half days on Easter. During that time, both sides accused each other of numerous violations, although the intensity of hostilities significantly decreased.

Recent reports indicate ongoing military confrontations in Ukraine despite a proposed ceasefire for Easter. The Ukrainian forces have reported numerous violations of the ceasefire, highlighting the complex dynamics of the conflict amid diplomatic efforts.
