Paapa Essiedu, a British actor, has reported receiving death threats after being cast as Professor Severus Snape in HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter series. In an interview with The Sunday Times, he detailed the backlash that followed the casting announcement.
Essiedu stated that he began receiving threatening messages on social media, including calls for him to resign and direct threats to his life. He emphasized that ignoring such messages does not eliminate the problem, as others can also see these comments and may react to them.
The actor expressed concern that such attacks should not be a norm for individuals simply doing their jobs. He remarked, “Although I hope I will be fine, no one should have to face this because they are doing their work. Many people risk their lives in their professions.”
Despite the negative attention, Essiedu noted that the experience has motivated him to delve deeper into his role and make the character his own. He recalled being a fan of J.K. Rowling’s book series during his childhood, although he did not watch the film adaptations. For him, the books represented an escape from reality.
He stated, “These images give me strength and make me even more eager to make this character my own, because I remember how I felt as a child. I imagined myself at Hogwarts on a broom, and the thought that a child like me could see themselves in that world? That is motivation not to fear those who say I would be better off dead than doing a job I will truly be proud of.”
Details on the Upcoming Series
The new Harry Potter series is set to adapt each book into a separate season. Francesca Gardiner serves as the showrunner, while Mark Mylod is directing.
Dominic MacLoughlin will portray the titular role, with Arabella Stenton and Alastair Stout playing Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley, respectively. John Litgow will take on the role of Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer will play Minerva McGonagall, and Nick Frost is cast as Rubeus Hagrid.
Essiedu’s casting as Severus Snape, a role previously played by Alan Rickman in the original films, has sparked a wave of negative reactions from a segment of the fanbase.
The premiere of the first season is scheduled for 2027, and Essiedu has signed a ten-year contract, describing it as a “significant commitment.”
