Rheinmetall has expressed admiration for the innovative efforts of Ukraine, following earlier disparaging comments made by its CEO regarding Ukrainian drones. The company acknowledged the significant contributions of the Ukrainian people in their ongoing defense against Russian aggression.
In a recent statement, Rheinmetall emphasized the dedication of every individual in Ukraine, noting that their effective resistance has persisted for over four years despite limited resources. “We deeply respect the tremendous efforts of the Ukrainian people to defend against the Russian invasion,” the statement read.
The company also highlighted the inspiration drawn from the innovative spirit and fighting morale of Ukrainians. “We are grateful for the opportunity to provide support using the resources at our disposal,” they added.
This shift in tone comes after CEO Armin Papperger previously dismissed Ukrainian drone production as akin to a “Lego game,” questioning the technological advancements compared to larger Western firms. He had referred to drone manufacturers as “Ukrainian housewives” who utilize 3D printers in their kitchens to produce drone components.
Papperger’s remarks sparked a backlash, with Ukrainian drone producers responding that the current era of innovation is indeed defined by their capabilities, as their domestically produced drones have proven effective in the field.
Rheinmetall has reversed its stance on Ukrainian drone innovation, acknowledging the significant efforts of the Ukrainian people in their defense against Russia. This comes after controversial comments from the company's CEO, which drew criticism from local drone manufacturers.
