U.S. Official Addresses Hungary’s Block on Ukraine Loan

The U.S. Permanent Representative to the EU, Andrew Pasder, has stated that Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s veto on a loan for Ukraine is not a concern for Washington.

Pasder emphasized that this issue is an internal matter for the European Union, asserting, “This is a problem for the EU, not for the United States.” He further indicated that the EU needs to determine how it will finance Ukraine and the extent of that support.

He expressed confidence that the EU would resolve the matter, stating, “The question of whether this loan will be granted and under what conditions should be decided internally by the EU, and I am absolutely confident they will sort it out.”

Additionally, Pasder noted that U.S. President Donald Trump has a positive view of Orban, highlighting Hungary’s friendly stance towards the U.S. He pointed out that there are shared views between the U.S. and Hungary on certain issues, particularly migration.

Pasder also suggested that much of the noise surrounding Hungary’s relationship with the EU will diminish after the upcoming elections, regardless of which party wins.

It is important to note that Hungary continues to block the EU loan to Ukraine. Recently, Orban stated that he would not lift the veto until Ukraine resumes imports of Russian oil.

U.S. officials have downplayed Hungary's veto on a loan for Ukraine, framing it as an EU internal issue. The situation remains tense as Hungary demands specific conditions before lifting its blockade.
