Zelensky Reflects on Four Years Since Russia’s Full-Scale Invasion

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky addressed the nation on the fourth anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion, emphasizing that Russian President Vladimir Putin has failed to achieve his objectives. Zelensky highlighted the resilience of Ukrainians in defending their independence during this challenging period.

In a video shared on Telegram, Zelensky remarked, “Today marks exactly four years since Putin attempted to capture Kyiv in three days. This speaks volumes about our resistance and the ongoing struggle of Ukraine. Behind these words are millions of our people, immense courage, and the hard work that has defined our journey since February 24.”

Zelensky recalled the first day of the invasion and his initial conversations with world leaders, including then-U.S. President Joe Biden. He recounted Biden’s offer to assist with evacuation due to the imminent threat to his life, to which he responded, “I need weapons, not a taxi.”

“I need weapons, not a taxi.”

He acknowledged the fear and shock felt by Ukrainians on that day, stating, “We were all scared and in pain, and many were in shock. Yet, on some invisible level, we all knew there was no other Ukraine for us. This is our home, and we understood what needed to be done.”

According to Zelensky, millions of Ukrainians made a decisive choice: instead of surrendering, they stood to defend their nation, recognizing that every tomorrow must be fought for.

He described the relentless pace of work in the early days of the war, with daily meetings involving his team, government officials, and military leaders, all focused on supporting the armed forces and the civilian population.

“Each package of aid, every sanction against Russia, every shipment of weapons had to be fought for. It was about instilling faith in Ukraine and ensuring the world became involved,” Zelensky stated.

Step by step, Ukraine built the resistance necessary to endure the initial days and months of the conflict. Zelensky noted that it was during this time that the world recognized Ukraine’s potential to withstand the aggression.

“Even in this prolonged tunnel, we cannot encapsulate the pain that Ukraine has endured. The suffering that Russia has inflicted upon every family and every Ukrainian heart is immeasurable,” he added.
