Ukrainian Security Service Thwarts Assassination Plot Against Army Commander

The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) has announced the arrest of an individual accused of espionage for Russia, who allegedly planned an attack on the commander of the 3rd Army Corps. The operation aimed to prevent a targeted missile strike on the commander’s location in a combat zone.

According to the SBU’s press center, the arrested agent was preparing a precise airstrike against the Ukrainian general’s position. Russian operatives reportedly recruited a drone operator from a different brigade operating in the Kharkiv region to assist in the operation.

Investigators revealed that the suspect sought information regarding the timing and location of the general’s arrival at his unit’s positions. The agent utilized his access to classified information and attempted to discreetly extract sensitive data from colleagues.

In addition, the suspect was allegedly planning to disclose the location of his brigade’s headquarters and training center, which were also targets for enemy fire. The SBU stated that the agent was identified early in his espionage activities, allowing for the documentation of his communications with Russian contacts and the protection of relevant defense locations.

The final phase of the operation culminated in the suspect’s arrest within the military garrison, where authorities seized a smartphone used to communicate with Russian operatives.

It was reported that the agent was recruited by Russian intelligence through his ex-wife, who resides in the temporarily occupied Zaporizhzhia region and works for Russian authorities. To maintain secrecy, the agent frequently deleted messages from his correspondence.

The SBU has charged the suspect under Article 111, Part 2 of the Ukrainian Criminal Code, which pertains to treason committed under martial law. He is currently in custody and faces a potential life sentence, along with asset confiscation.

The commander of the 3rd Army Corps of the Ukrainian Armed Forces is Brigadier General Andriy Biletsky.
