Ukrainian Court Sentences Man to 15 Years for Attempted Terrorism

A court in Ukraine has sentenced a 33-year-old man to 15 years in prison for attempting to carry out a terrorist attack in Lviv Oblast. The sentence includes the confiscation of his property.

The individual, a resident of Kryvyi Rih in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast, was found guilty of treason and illegal handling of explosives. According to the investigation, he established contact with a representative from Russia in May 2025, who tasked him with detonating explosives near a public transport stop that housed a military checkpoint.

In exchange for carrying out this act, he was promised a payment of $1,000. Following the instructions from his handler, the man traveled to Lviv Oblast and rented a hotel room. He subsequently located a backpack containing two improvised explosive devices, received activation instructions, and awaited further directives.

The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) apprehended him in the hotel room, where he was assembling the bombs with mobile phones intended for remote detonation.

The court’s ruling highlights the ongoing challenges Ukraine faces regarding internal security amid the ongoing conflict. The case underscores the serious legal consequences for individuals engaged in acts of terrorism against the state.
