Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky emphasized the importance of direct negotiations with Russia, suggesting that discussions should occur at the leadership level. In an interview with the French publication Le Monde, he stated that Ukraine is serious about pursuing peace talks.
Zelensky remarked, “Ukrainians take negotiations seriously. We believe it is essential to communicate, preferably at the level of leaders, and we are prepared for that.” He expressed concern that Russia seeks a military resolution that would force Ukraine to accept its terms, including a withdrawal of Ukrainian forces from territories in Donetsk and Luhansk.
According to Zelensky, both sides recognize the high human cost for Russia in attempting to capture these areas, with estimates of losses ranging from 28,000 to 35,000 soldiers each month. He pointed out that even with such sacrifices, the outcome remains uncertain. “They could end up burying between 300,000 to a million of their military personnel. They do not value human life, but they understand the financial implications,” he noted.
The president also criticized the Kremlin for its lack of understanding regarding the societal impact of the ongoing conflict. He stated, “They are exploring dialogue with the Americans, hoping to convey to Ukrainians that there is nothing worth fighting for. We are clearly explaining to our partners why that is not the case.”
In January, Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha mentioned Zelensky’s willingness to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin to address key issues related to territorial disputes and the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant during peace negotiations. Additionally, Ukraine held talks with U.S. officials in Miami on March 21-22, which were described as constructive in narrowing unresolved issues.
Zelensky reiterated that Ukraine sees no readiness from Russia to end the war, urging for increased pressure on Moscow. This perspective contrasts with U.S. views that suggest the Kremlin might be seeking a resolution to the conflict.
President Zelensky has called for peace negotiations with Russia to be conducted at the leadership level, highlighting the human costs of continued conflict and the need for serious dialogue. He criticized the Kremlin's understanding of the societal impact of the war and reiterated Ukraine's position on territorial integrity.
