Rustem Umerov, the Secretary of Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council, has traveled to the Middle East with military officials to discuss mutual assistance for Ukraine. This initiative comes in response to recent challenges posed by Iranian actions, which have heightened regional instability.
In a statement on March 10, President Volodymyr Zelensky emphasized the significance of this mission, stating, “Our team, including military personnel and Rustem Umerov, is heading to the Gulf region, where our forces can assist in protecting lives and stabilizing the situation.” He noted the ongoing threats from Iran, particularly the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for global oil and gas supplies.
Umerov, accompanied by representatives from military intelligence, the Ministry of Defense, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, aims to establish concrete agreements with nations seeking to support Ukraine. Zelensky highlighted the need for continued assistance, particularly in bolstering Ukraine’s air defense capabilities.
“Stability is essential for us. Those who currently reach out to Ukraine for support must continue to aid our defense efforts, especially our air defense systems,” he stated. Zelensky also recalled a proposal made last year to the United States regarding a partnership in drone production, asserting that Ukraine possesses unparalleled expertise in countering drone strikes.
He concluded by stressing the importance of this collaboration, stating, “Without our experience and the Gulf region’s involvement, it will be challenging for partners in Europe and America to develop a robust defense system.”
Rustem Umerov leads a Ukrainian delegation to the Middle East to secure support against Iranian threats. The mission aims to establish mutual assistance agreements amid rising regional tensions.
