NASA’s Artemis II Mission Sets New Distance Record in Lunar Flyby

The Artemis II mission has successfully completed a lunar flyby, achieving a significant milestone in human space exploration. The crew, led by astronaut Christina Koch, reached a distance of approximately 400,000 kilometers (252,756 miles) from Earth, surpassing the previous record set by Apollo 13 in 1970.

During the mission, the Orion spacecraft temporarily lost communication with mission control for 40 minutes while it was in the radio shadow behind the Moon. Upon reestablishing contact, Koch addressed Earth, emphasizing the mission’s broader goals of exploration and collaboration.

“When we started this flight to the Moon, I said we are not leaving Earth, we are choosing it. And that is true. We will explore. We will build. We will build ships. We will visit Earth again. We will establish scientific outposts. We will operate rovers. We will engage in radio astronomy. We will found companies. We will develop industry. We will inspire. But ultimately, we will always choose Earth. We will always choose each other.”

The Artemis II crew consists of Commander Reid Wiseman, Pilot Victor Glover, Mission Specialist Christina Koch, and Mission Specialist Jeremy Hansen. The Orion spacecraft is currently on its trajectory back to Earth.

This mission marks the first human flight to the Moon in 54 years, serving as a crucial step toward future lunar landings as part of NASA’s ongoing Artemis program.

Background:

  • The Artemis II mission was launched on April 1 at 18:35 local time (April 2 at 01:35 Kyiv time) from Kennedy Space Center.
  • NASA previously released images of Earth taken from the Orion spacecraft during the flight.
  • If all goes as planned, NASA aims to have the spacecraft land in the Pacific Ocean on April 10.

NASA's Artemis II mission has successfully completed a lunar flyby, setting a new record for human distance in space. This mission is a critical step toward future lunar landings as part of the Artemis program.
