Two unidentified drones entered Finnish airspace and subsequently crashed on its territory, prompting an investigation by the Finnish Defense Forces. Authorities suspect these may be Ukrainian drones that were attempting to target locations in Russia but were disrupted by electronic warfare measures.
The incident occurred on the morning of March 29, when military personnel detected several small objects flying slowly and at low altitudes over the Baltic Sea and southeastern Finland. An F/A-18 Hornet fighter jet was deployed for reconnaissance.
According to the Ministry of Defense, one drone fell north of Kouvola, while the other landed to the east of the city, located about 50 kilometers from the Russian border. Police have cordoned off these areas for further investigation.
Defense Minister Antti Häkkänen emphasized the seriousness of the situation, stating, “Drones have entered Finnish territory. Security agencies responded immediately. An investigation is ongoing, and more information will be released once verified.”
Prime Minister Petteri Orpo confirmed the reports of the drone crashes, noting that they could be of Ukrainian origin, although investigations are still underway. He pointed out that Ukraine had recently conducted attacks near the Finnish border, and Russia has employed electronic countermeasures against drones.
Orpo described the incident as a violation of territorial integrity, stating, “This is a very serious matter. While it is likely these are Ukrainian drones, the circumstances are being clarified, and we will provide details later.” He clarified that Finland did not shoot down the drones; they crashed on their own.
The Prime Minister also mentioned that the issue of whether to engage drones is evaluated on a case-by-case basis, and there is currently no blanket order to shoot down drones. In light of the incident, discussions are underway regarding a potential meeting involving the President and the government.
Furthermore, the Ministry of Defense has indicated that at least one of the errant drones near Kouvola is believed to be Ukrainian.
Finland is investigating the crash of two drones, suspected to be Ukrainian, after they entered its airspace on March 29. The Defense Forces are examining the circumstances surrounding the incident, which raises concerns over territorial integrity.
