Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has condemned the recent drone attack by Iran targeting Azerbaijan’s Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic. In a telephone conversation with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, Erdogan expressed his condolences and solidarity with the Azerbaijani people.
The attack, which occurred earlier this week, prompted Aliyev to convene a meeting of the country’s Security Council. During this session, he strongly denounced the assault, labeling it a terrorist act and calling for immediate accountability for those responsible.
Aliyev further demanded explanations and apologies from Iran, emphasizing the need for legal action against the perpetrators. He clarified that Azerbaijan does not intend to engage in military operations against Iran, asserting that the nation’s policy does not support aggression towards neighboring countries.
This incident marks a significant escalation in tensions, as it follows a previous drone strike by Iran on March 5, which targeted an airport in the Nakhchivan region. In response, Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the Iranian ambassador to deliver a formal protest, and the Azerbaijani military has been placed on high alert.
