Ukrainian President Denounces Russian Claims of War Pause

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has dismissed Russian President Vladimir Putin’s assertions regarding a potential pause in the conflict as falsehoods. Zelensky emphasized that Ukraine does not seek a temporary ceasefire, but rather a complete end to hostilities.

He characterized the Kremlin’s claims that Ukraine might exploit a ceasefire for regrouping as “demagoguery and lies.” According to Zelensky, Russia itself requires a pause as much as Ukraine does, citing that it mobilizes approximately 40,000 troops monthly and suffers significant losses on the battlefield.

Zelensky reiterated the necessity for a genuine ceasefire, stating it is needed “yesterday, today, tomorrow,” while underscoring that the ultimate goal remains the conclusion of the war rather than a short-term truce.

Additionally, referencing intelligence reports, the president noted that Russian military advances in 2025 are occurring at a sluggish pace and are accompanied by considerable casualties. He pointed out disputed areas along the front where Russia claims control but fails to maintain positions effectively.

In a separate development, Kirill Budanov, head of the Ukrainian President’s Office, hinted at the possibility of peace negotiations. He indicated that discussions between Ukraine and Russia are approaching a critical juncture where both sides will need to make definitive decisions.

Following recent talks in Geneva, the parties have managed to narrow their positions on military issues, particularly concerning mechanisms for monitoring adherence to a potential ceasefire. However, there has been little progress on the political front, with the control of the unoccupied parts of Donbas remaining a central topic of contention.

The next round of negotiations may take place by the end of February, as stated by President Zelensky.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has rejected Russian claims of a potential war pause, asserting that Ukraine seeks a complete end to hostilities. Recent developments indicate a narrowing of military positions in ongoing peace negotiations, though political progress remains limited.
