Belgium has detained a tanker associated with Russia’s shadow fleet, marking a significant step in the ongoing efforts to enforce sanctions against Russian oil exports. The operation, supported by France, resulted in the vessel being sent to the port of Zeebrugge for further legal action.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky praised Belgium’s decisive action, noting that the tanker had evaded restrictions for an extended period by using a convenient flag and falsified documentation. He expressed gratitude to France for its support in this operation targeting what he referred to as a ‘floating wallet of Moscow.’
Zelensky emphasized the need for a robust response to Russia’s actions, likening the country to a mafia organization. He stated, ‘If they reject the rules for the sake of war, the response must reflect this reality.’ This statement underscores Ukraine’s call for stronger measures against Russian aggression.
In light of this seizure, Zelensky has urged European nations to modernize their legislation. He proposed that tankers transporting Russian oil in violation of sanctions should not only be stopped but also confiscated. The Ukrainian leader suggested that the seized oil could be repurposed to enhance European security, stressing the importance of a resolute stance against Kremlin’s energy blackmail.
The shadow fleet, as it is known, consists of hundreds of aging tankers with unclear ownership structures, which Russia utilizes to circumvent established price caps on oil exports. Previously, G7 and EU nations have indicated intentions to strengthen oversight of vessels that pose risks to the region’s ecological and economic security.
Today’s operation by Belgium marks the first interception of a tanker linked to this shadow fleet, signaling a potential shift in enforcement strategies against Russian oil exports.
Belgium has successfully detained a Russian oil tanker linked to the shadow fleet, with support from France. Ukrainian President Zelensky has called for stronger European legislation to confiscate such vessels and repurpose the oil for regional security.
