Ukraine’s Strategic Partnerships in Response to Middle East Tensions

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky emphasized the global implications of the ongoing tensions in the Middle East during a statement on April 1. He noted that these developments are affecting world markets and the cost of living across various countries.

Zelensky highlighted the need for robust responses to new technological challenges posed by the conflict, stating, “War makes weapons more dangerous. Our goal is enhanced collective security.” This statement reflects Ukraine’s ongoing efforts to forge stronger ties with nations in the Middle East.

Currently, Ukraine is actively collaborating with Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Qatar, while also maintaining communication with Jordan. Zelensky mentioned that discussions are ongoing with Bahrain, Kuwait, and Iraq. Additionally, Rustem Umerov, Ukraine’s Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council, reported on planned engagements with Turkey and other nations that possess significant potential for cooperation.

The president noted that Ukraine’s military expertise and interceptor capabilities are yielding positive results, leading to several long-term agreements aimed at mutual strengthening and the development of new strategies.

Zelensky drew a parallel between the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz and the maritime challenges Ukraine faced following the onset of full-scale Russian aggression in 2022. He stated, “The blockade of normal shipping in the Strait of Hormuz is essentially a similar challenge to what we encountered in Ukraine when Russia attempted to block our ports and access to the sea, albeit on a more dangerous scale. No nation should face terrorist attacks alone.”

He expressed gratitude to all those involved in coordinating and developing frameworks for collective security. This sentiment underscores Ukraine’s commitment to enhancing its security partnerships in the region.

On the eve of Zelensky’s remarks, the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine announced that Umerov and his team are continuing efforts to expand Ukraine’s security partnerships in the Middle East.

The situation in the Strait of Hormuz has escalated since the outbreak of conflict in the Middle East, with Iran effectively blocking the strait, which is a critical passage for approximately one-fifth of the world’s oil exports, totaling around 20 million barrels per day. This blockade has resulted in a significant surge in oil prices, and in late March, Iran announced it would impose tariffs on vessels passing through the strait.

Ukraine is strengthening its security partnerships in response to escalating tensions in the Middle East, particularly in relation to the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. President Zelensky's comments highlight the global implications of these developments and Ukraine's proactive measures to enhance collective security.
